The ‘object amplifier’ is a device in which allows humans to enter into a world that is typically only inhabited by objects. As humans dominantly perceive sound through air, objects perceive their sonic environment through feeling. It is in this feeling of sound that vibrations are physically transferred from material to material or object to object. Access into this world, and that of a flat ontology, can be achieved through the use of contact microphones and amplification. This realm is something we can only vaguely imagine, and not part of our conventional way of perceiving things. The amplifier, is a device, or a lens, that gives the human (user) the capability to feel sound or hear sound as objects do, listen to intrinsic qualities of an object, or listen to an active dialog happening internally between a set or family of objects and their immediate spatial context.
An alternative of the anthropocentric world view, is one that focused on a world made of discrete, withdrawn entities, things that challenge and exceed definition through relations alone. This impulse decenters the human-object or mind-world relation that weaves through current phenomenological discourse or other modes of direct human access, instead tapping into a strange sub phenomenal world that we can’t see or know but can try to imagine. It forces a reevaluation of the conventions of sensation and understanding of things, opening up the possibility of crossing over between how things appear and their strange inner realities and relations. By including objects and embracing their own equal but different signatures into our own world views, it can further our understanding of the difference between things and become conscious that things equally exist independent from our own self-centered vantage point affording us an insight into the perspective of objects.
